The FIFA 2006 World Cup to be held in germany from June 9- July 9 is bringing the
world closer. The FIFA World cup is the most important and significant event of this year in the world of Soccer.

18th FIFA World Cup is going to be held in Germany from 9th June 2006 to 9th July 2006. 12 cities of Germany are hosting this years World Cup. The schedule for the 2006 World Cup was approved in December 2003.

A gala opening of the World Cup will be staged at Munich and the final match will be played at Berlin. Also the two semi finals of this year's World Cup will take place in Munich and Dortmund.

There will be 8 venues and each will host 5 matches. Berlin, Dortmund, Munich and Stuttgart will be the exceptional host cities holding 6 matches. Also there will be a gap of two days
in between the matches to be held in the same stadium. In addition to this each venue will host two matches featuring at least one of the top-seeded teams.

The foundation stone for the building contains a steel football with a diameter of 1.30 meters, into which 204 Zurich schoolchildren each placed a bag containing earth from one of FIFA’s 204 member associations. This was done to make sure that the land on which the new home of FIFA is belongs to the members of world football’s governing body.

Addressing the gathering, the FIFA President highly praised the strong gesture and said: “We could not wish for more solid foundations for the Home of FIFA than earth from each of our members.”

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter also conveyed his thanks to everybody involved in the project before expressing special gratitude to the Zurich municipal authorities for having dealt with FIFA’s request for planning permission in useful fashion. After submission on 19 December 2003, FIFA’s application for planning permission was approved in April 2004 and FIFA commenced the construction work on 24 May with the aim of moving into its new headquarters in 2006, the year of the next FIFA World Cup™. “

The FIFA World Cup building is 140 meters long, 47 meters wide and 12 meters high. As well as two upper storeys, the elongated rectangular building boasts six underground floors, with the first subterranean level also acting as the entrance to the building.

This new building is served by excellent transport connections, and has room for over 300 employees. The auditorium has a seating capacity of 200 persons. Furthermore, the Home of FIFA will be a zero emission building. The new Home of FIFA boasts of an artificial turf football pitch of international dimensions, a training pitch and a beach soccer pitch.

In a special gesture to mark the FIFA Centennial and the building of the new headquarters, the City of Zurich honored world football’s governing body by changing the name of “Adolf-Jöhr-Weg”, the street leading up to the new Home of FIFA, to “FIFA-Strasse”
